Or at least, the most self-absorbed, consider the entire world beyond themselves to be NPC's. In philosophy class they teach us about "solipsism" which is the belief that the self is the only thing that can be known to exist. I think social media and therapeutic culture has exacerbated this in women and resulted in this weird modern "female solipsism" where even normal every day women seem to think that their emotions, their feelings, their moods, are the only thing that really exists.

You: Did you know that there was a tragic fire in Maui?
Me: Yeah, hundreds died apparently. I wonder what caused it?
Modern Woman: OMG, I bought the best bikini in Maui !

OR

Me: This has been a great day. We had a lovely day walking and hiking and eating at that restaurant and then seeing our friends!

Her: I can't believe you didn't realize the hike hurt my feet because I wore the wrong shoes, and then you took me to that restaurant with the rude waitress and then we had to hang out with your friend who didn't even remember that my birthday was last week.

It's a combination of self-absorption and manufactured indignity. It's modern woman in The West.
