I can see where people with this view are coming from. I liked the first one, it's well made, it's visually interesting, I love sci-fi. I didn't fall asleep during it or any of that nonsense, I've seen it multiple times, but the feeling I always have is I'm just watching things happening and I never feel invested in what is happening on the screen. For whatever reason I just don't get sucked in to the story like I feel like I should.

For example, the Harkonnen attack seems like it should have been a huge deal, but it just feels like...a thing that is happening? I know they wanted to not overload people with lore/backstory, but I actually think they needed to add more so you feel more connected to the story.

I really enjoyed both part 1 and part 2 but I also did a bit of research in the lore before watching because I never set aside enough time to read the book for myself. However, I will be starting Messiah soon so I don't have this issue for the final film in the trilogy.

I will say, if there is a critique from the first two films, it can be hard to grasp what's happening going in completely blind. However, even if you just scratch the surface in researching the universe that Herbert created, you'll understand how hard of a task it is to actually put these stories on the big screen.

If you want to have a better idea of what to expect before watching the movies, the internet is out there and a 5-10 minute youtube video can help out quite a bit. If you don't feel like doing any research, that's totally fine, but there are going to be some pretty confusing parts.
