Built up tolerance over years.

Use to work with a guy who drank a 12 pack of beer every night. Drank a case every Saturday and Sunday. Said he started out at a couple of beers and it built from there.

On top of all of this he smoked a pack of cigs a day. Last I heard he was still kicking. Gotta be in his 70s. Some folk's bodies can take a beating.
