It signified a shift from bands started by older GenXers to younger GenXers. It must have to do with slightly different musical influences. My theory is that hip hop/rap started to negatively impact the genre. And I would add that rap is the most egregious assault on music in history.

Layne and Kurt were three years older than Fred... The founder of Slipknot is two years younger thank those two. There isn't a big age difference.
