Just me, but are the Pelicans playing more zone defense, and can they be really good at it?

Used occasionally...I actually think they can play a fairly solid zone D...especially considering how many weak links they have...when certain players are forced to play man on man defense. Anything they helps to hide your weaknesses...is usually a good thing.

Herb covers up so many flaws in man defense, particularly for the starting unit. Pels have cause for concern that this responsibility will wear on Herb, moreso while Dyson is out. This is why I'm intrigued by Coach Green's increased use of zone defense and whether they can be really good at it.
Pels, are a really long-limbed team, and could field a suffocating, ala Syracuse or Florida (shout out Corey Brewer), zone defense. This is the NBA obviously, but it feels as if Pels have been getting, not only stops, but turnovers while deployed in zone.

They move very quickly and cover a good bit of ground in their zone.
Communication is key as you see guys rotating from the top to bottom and JV is the only guy staying in one spot.
It's been most effective with the backup guys like when Jose and Trey are out there, and obviously Herb. Haven't seen it much at all with Zion on the court.
CJ/Jose/Herb/Trey/JV lineup does well with it though, as it kind of masks the liabilities CJ/Jose/Trey have defensively. They are all 3 guys who are smart and give the effort all the time, they just aren't good individual defenders, but when they all work as a team like that they can be a good defensive unit.

No fan of Gators...but I always said their 2006-2007 team would be the last GREAT college basketball team. Always wondered how they got those 3 great players to return for their Jr year. Horford (4th in the draft), Brewer (7th) and Noah (9th)...plus throw in Taurean Green and the amazing 3-pt shooter, Lee Humphrey...you'll never be able to keep that kinda talent around nowadays. Long gone by their Jr year.

For sure, but it looks as if it allows Val to stay on the court. As you point out, in the Pels zone, Val looks as if he stays in the low post box which keeps him from having to come out and be compromised on the perimeter.
