Wonder if it’s based on air flow measurement? Vacuuming it would get the large stuff but dust/pollen/particulates could still be embedded in the filter media and restricting air flow.

In any event, I just by a new one. You can get them pretty cheap for every model of car and the cheap ones aren’t any different than the expensive ones IMO.

This is probably the correct answer. I'll admit the cleaned older filter wasn't nearly as white as the new one, even though I vacuumed out all the big stuff. I'm going to try the keyboard duster can trick next time inside that slot.
