Somehow I don't believe this. We had vehicles for decades with A/C but no cabin air filter.

Do you think auto AC evaporator coils today are manufactured with the same robustness than they were made 20 to 30 years ago? I can tell you with confidence your house HVAC evap coil is not.

Keeping it clean by changing a $50 filter every few years is a whole lot cheaper than $2-3K evap coil replacement where the whole dash has to come out to replace it.

Things change. We also had decades of vehicles not being fuel injected, not having ABS, having manual windows, etc.

Go pull your cabin filter and look at how gross it is. They routinely catch all kinds of dirt and leaves. If you pull your filter the thing that is directly below it is the blower fan. If you didn’t have the filter all that shite would get caught in the fan and seize it.
