I’ve always wondered how the c/b analysis works for movable roofs when they build a stadium. It seems time an expensive upgrade that results in a really high per use cost.
I’ve thought the same thing. I can see how it makes sense vs. open-air but I struggle to see how the cost/benefit works compared to a normal dome.
Like.. yeah it’s cool to be able to have the roof open when the weather is nice. But does that put enough butts in the seats to make it worth the cost?
My guess is that the ROI isn’t really there other than meeting fan expectations for a nice “modern” stadium. Maybe those extra amenities make a difference when non-MLB events are looking at venues.

Current estimates are in the $100 million additional cost range.
and with us now being in the $1.5 Billion range for most new stadiums, that's a noticeable amount, but not astronomical.
I read somewhere that Minute Maid roof cost an additional $65 mil and opens/closes it an average of 160 times per year for different events.
25 years (so far) at 160 per year is around 4,000 openings.
so about $16,000 per opening and dropping with each use.
if they hypothetically keep using it another 15 years at same pace, that drops it to right about $10,000 per use give or take.
