I remember I moved to a large city in the south and was told how cheap housing was and yada yada yada.
And then I looked into it and, sure, housing was cheap. If you want to live in a craphole. Otherwise, even mediocre housing was just as expensive as anywhere outside of NYC and California.
One of my coworkers who was new with me chose the "cheap housing in bad area route." She lasted a year or so until she couldn't take the lack of safety anymore and moved.
I think that's largely the norm in America nowadays. You either pay ridiculously high rent for mediocre accommodations or you risk car break ins, home invasions, and shootings living in a bad neighborhood.
