Why is the Japanese Portuguese translator speaking English and not Portuguese?

Because he's an English linguist. He speaks all the trading languages.

I thought about this. But if they kept this standard up the show would be almost entirely and Japanese or Portuguese. The Japanese obviously all speak their language to each other, and use Portuguese to try to speak to Blackthorne or any other westerner since he’s fluent in that. I never thought about that when reading the book but technically there’d be very little English spoken so I guess the choice was to make almost all the Portuguese conversations English.

I think the intent is that your deduce that they’re actually speaking Portuguese to each other, but for TV purposes their convos are in English so the entire show isn’t subtitled.
