Because it has become far too expensive to build anything besides functional construction due to regulations.

Communist shitholes aren’t what we’re talking about. America is capitalist, but capitalism isn’t the problem.
The bigger issue is education and citizen awareness of freedom of choice. You have to have informed citizens to maximize the potential of capitalism. These fast food restaurants look like bland boxes so that different chains can move in and out without any trouble for the landlord. If customers voiced their protest with avoiding them, they’d be forced to adapt or perish.

Yes it is much worse, those early Soviet Union housing complexes are worse than the projects. Now the architecture and designs in Eastern Europe predating communism were incredible

Well, you are certainly right about that. But capitalism and communism are not the only possibilities, and beauty in art is best promulgated by religious authoritarianism.
