Canceling Southwest flight

Wife and I purchased tickets for family members who had to back out. I didn’t purchase refundable/transferable tickets. If I just cancel their tickets they will get a flight credit instead of me getting my money back. Is it permissible to upgrade their flights to a refundable status, then wait a couple of days to cancel?

I have a feeling the answer is no, but I've never tried this to try and game the system. I'd bet since the original ticket will show as a credit, that's exactly what would happen if you updated to business select/refundable ticket

I finally found the answer. A flight credit would still be issued for the wanna get away ticket. A refund would be issued for the upgrade. No full refund. Thank you.

If you purchased rhe cheapest of the flight options "Wanna Get Away" you get a flight credit that has to be used within a year. I had to cancel my flight for Thanksgiving 2020 when I was already at the airport and waiting to board our gate. It basically comes in a gift card form that only you can use.

Flight credits do not expire now. Policy changed last year. They’ll be attached to your Rapid Rewards account and available to use on your next purchase.

Yes I do know that. This ticket I asked about though was one that I purchased for someone else. They will get the flight credit which is what I hoped to avoid

They can transfer the points to you.

I think the credits are non-transferable. If someone knows differently, let me know. I have the opposite issue of OP in that I have credits I would like to share with someone.

The credit can be transferred only if the ticket was the much more expensive transferable, refundable class. Someone said earlier that they had never tried to game the system like that. I haven’t either but it gets old getting games by the system.

I'd call customer service and ask what they can do. Flight credit transfers usually come at a fee based on the amount of points.
