I wonder if Woody Harrelson meets this criteria. When he played Woody in Cheers, he was notoriously and humorously quite dumb.
He’s played lots of comedies since then, and he’s very versatile, and excellent IMO, but when he first hit the big screen, I was surprised. I never thought he would be so good because he played the dumb Woody Boyd in Cheers so well.
