Tons of people watched it, and even though we almost all hated it/thought it was terrible, a ton of people liked it. They've never announced a follow up TD season as fast as this. It was watched by more people than any season of TD ever. HBO cares about eyeballs and money, and this apparently brought both.
Where are the numbers? The studio may be gambling that this news will make people watch the current season and anticipate the next. You give Hollywood the benefit of the doubt too often. I do not believe the numbers were good and until I see an objective set of numbers, I don't believe it did well.
Hollywood has sunk an ungodly amount of money into DEI content and they've shown no attempt to admit they're wrong about its core philosophy (i.e. blank slatism, systemic racism, etc.)
Do not assume this isn't a double-down to prove their point. At the end of the day they know the truth regardless of the wishcasting they do with their press releases.
They truly believe they can use language to override objective reality.

"the numbers" are in the OP, but they are also "per HBO", which i am of the opinion means they are about as reliable as MSM reported COVID statistics.
