highly doubt it was supposed to be live. They knew they would have communications issues with the lander after it touched down. They weren’t sure how long it would be, could have been minutes or hours. When they ended they had multiple antennas trying to pinpoint the craft to search for a signal. No way a tiny camera would have been able to transmit it back to Earth in “real” time
