I'd always heard that long-time Huntsville, AL mayor Joe Davis (served from '68-'88) was tied to the mafia. Not sure if it was Dixie or the real deal.

Want something more recent? Look up Mike Blakely of Limestone Co. Everyone from the 80s on knew that man was crooked as a 3 dollar bill, but he stayed in office.
