should I pull plugs from the healthy portion of my yard or order pre cut plugs?
Get sod or pull them from your own yard. It ensures consistency and your yard should recover pretty quickly.
Plugs are similar to sod in that they need to be watered and will generally be somewhat slower to establish and spread.
I checkered a part of my yard with “plugs” and it took a couple seasons to fully fill in.

So you take plugs from one area
Then you've got to remove dirt from the area that needs plugs.
The question: Do you fill the first area with sand or with the dirt from the other area. I guess it depends on if it's weed free or not?
What do you suggest? I would think pure sand then take the other dirt and fill a low spot if needed.
