Forsey and Schiff wrote the song for Simple Minds but offered it to several other acts before Simple Minds agreed to record it. - Wikipedia

Here's a good article about the history of the song and who got offered it first. (John Hughes wanted Simple Minds to do the song, they didn't want to perform a song someone else wrote.)
