Using my "stupid idea" here is what the field would have been and the bracket
Auto Qualifiers
AAC Tulane SMU
ACC Louisville FSU
B1G Michigan Iowa
Big XII Texas oSu
CUSA Liberty NMSU
MAC Miami, OH Toledo
MWC UNLV Boise
PAC 12 Washington Oregon
SEC Bama UGA
Sun Belt App St Troy
At Larges
tOSU
Mizzou
Penn St
Ole Miss
Left Out
OU
LSU
Arizona
Notre Dame
NC State
Oregon St
Tennessee
Clemson
K-State
Bracket
17. Tulane @ 16. Liberty, winner plays 1. Michigan
24. NMSU @ 9. Mizzou, winner plays 8. Oregon
20. App St @ 13. Iowa, winner plays 4. Alabama
21. Miami (OH) @ 12. Oklahoma St, winner plays 5. FSU
18. Troy @ 15. SMU, winner plays 2. Washington
23. UNLV @ 10. Ole Miss, winner plays 7. Ohio St
19. Boise @ 14. Penn St winner plays 3. Texas
22. Toledo @ 11. Louisville, winner plays 6. UGA
Ole Miss, Louisville, Penn St, and Ole Miss were moved off seed lines to avoid conference games before Semi Finals.
This bracket is using strict by laws and tournament rules of NCAA Championships
Using the 24 Teams from the Committee no movement
Notre Dame v Iowa, Winner Plays Michigan
SMU v Mizzou, winner plays Oregon
oSu v LSU, winner plays Bama
Tennessee v OU, winner plays FSU
NC State v Louisville, winner plays Washington
Liberty v Penn St, winner plays tOSU
Oregon St v Arizona, winner plays Texas
Clemson v Ole Miss, winner plays UGA
This bracket is way more fun to watch, but it has multiple rematches within the first and 2nd rounds.
I just think 24 is the right number, I just think the conferences should all be represented, and that every team have a legit chance at a NC before the season starts.

I absolutely love college football and its really hard for someone to present ANY criteria that would diminish my adoration of the game.
A playoff game in which 2023 App St and Iowa were auto qualifiers meets that criteria. In spades.

They wouldn’t actually have a legit chance though. You’d just have a ton of blowouts until you got down to 4-5 teams, and then it would still be mostly blowouts looking at the playoff results to date.
