Have you tried googling this? I've been down a rabbit hole on this for the past hour, and while there isn't a consensus, the vast majority of info I've found is between 2k-5k calories, with the majority of estimates under 3k. The highest outlier I've found was 6k. Stanford claims 2900. Do we even know where the op got this number?

And add the logic problem: if you need to burn 5 or 6k extra calories for no other reason than to provide yourself with an additional 5-6k calories, at some point, an equilibrium will be met. People as a whole won't continue to work harder than they have to for no other reason than to provide the extra calories they need just to do extra work.

One, I did find that one source that said
quote:

Michel Rouche, on the other hand, asserted that the typical Carolingian-including the peasants-had access to a monotonous, but abundant, supply of foodstuffs and may have consumed an average of 6,000-9,000 calories per day.

Two, I originally heard this from Matthew Lewis. Who is a historian whose day job is interviewing archeologists and cohost is a bio archeologist. Again, maybe his amount is too high. He wasn’t writing a paper for review. But I think the point still it’s did jf they’re eating 4k-5k calories
