Believe it or not, there are a lot of terrible people in the country. Cops have millions of interactions a year with these people and prevent bad situations from getting worse.

You never hear about those because containing a homeless guy who’s out of his mind or going to talk to a drunk in his trailer who’s screaming at his wife and kids and breaking things isn’t newsworthy. But on aggregate a lot of lives are saved. You only hear about the tragic loses when things go wrong.

Are all cops good? Heck no. Do cops need better/more frequent training on how to de-escalate? 100%. Do we as a society need to rethink the way cops are deployed? Most likely. But the idea that it’s a “useless profession” is absurd. The worst crime in the country is in areas with little police presence so you’re free to see what that’s like for yourself.
