I checked Henry Thomas in a 3 on 3 basketball game in the gym armory during his freshman year. I was 6’ 2” and Henry was definitely shorter than me, and he was fat. I had no idea he was on the football team.
I figured I had a mismatch and he’d never be able to guard me. I was shocked at his athletic ability. He could outjump me by a lot, and I was a decent jumper. Not only could he outjump me, but he was also so wide that I could not get near the ball. He was also as nice a guy as I ever played against.
We played about four games in a row, and when we were done I asked him about himself, and he told me he was a nose guard on the team. Well, Ramsey Dardar and Greg Bowser were both seniors, so there was going to be a big gap to fill, but I didn’t think a guy that short could actually play for LSU. He wasn’t above 6’ 1” at the time. I figured he was a walkon and practice fodder. He turned out to be damn good.
