No. Not as I think you mean. There is no requirement for either party’s nominee to win enough delegates, by popular vote, to secure the nomination. The requirement is that a majority of delegates vote for them. That’s it.
It’s only in recent times that the nominee is always the top vote getter in the various primaries and caucuses. Abe Lincoln, for example, only had 102 delegates after the first convention vote. He won the nomination on the fourth ballot with a Tigerdropping-auspicious 350 votes.
