Is it more of a marine thing, where you’re actually making a distress call and requesting assistance?

In a case like this it seems like there’s not much that ATC can do to help them anyway, other than clearing a runway (which they couldn’t reach). Seems a bit different than a vessel calling for assistance. Not sure if I’m thinking about that correctly.

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure pilots are trained to call mayday in an emergency and that sort of helps air traffic know to stay away etc.

But yeah I’m sure I’m practice they’re not thinking about protocols when the shite is really hitting the fan
