What is the weather like in early April?
Weather is unpredictable, especially that early in the month. Could be 50s and sunny one day or high 30s / low 40s and rain the next. Not an easy time to plan but it won't be bitterly cold.

Then spending a few days there. Suggestions?
Without any indication of what you like to do (i.e. stick to tourist sites or explore different neighborhoods), can least to give you some basic direction: Sears Tower, Lakefront Trail (if weather cooperates), check concert schedule at Salt Shed, Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium, Cubs game (they have a homestand the week you're here / if weather cooperates), and Garfield Park Conservatory

Michael Jordan’s steak house has been recommended. Any thing else?
Chicago has 77 neighborhoods. There is plenty to eat I'd be able to help a bit more if you give me a sense of preferred cuisines and openness to taking the train. Logan Square, for example, has quickly become one of the 2-3 best food neighborhoods in the city. With the number of breweries and cocktail bars also in the neighborhood, it's absolutely worth a go.
ETA: Would recommend you read through some threads on this and F&D boards. Just filter 'Chicago' on the Search link for both boards.
