Don't assume the DMV is on top of it. I got a letter from them in my name for a car I bought 2 months before saying insurance lapsed and I had a fine. I never even had a policy at the carrier listed (previous owners policy I guess). I had coverage on the car all along on my policy. Get that sorted out. Then get one for my other car I bought new 5 yrs ago and saying it lapsed. DMV said the computer dies that sometimes.
