Its very true, the cheap stuff is absolute crap full of fillers and by-products. The expensive stuff is fantastic, but costs an arm and a leg. I shoot for somewhere in the middle.

Me also, been doing well with Diamond naturals skin and coat. Any time I've fed anything other than chicken I've seen improvement in skin, shedding, allergies etc. many different types of dogs also.
