This is what happens with only a few companies left running centralized production sites by computer pushing content to remote unmanaged often very rural broadcast sites via satellite (generally one way traffic with little or no indication of verified receipt). Dead air or catastrophic events can go unnoticed for days until reporting reaching someone that can schedule an RF tech to visit the site outside of normal rotation etc....
With that being said, was the 200 ft tower even in use? Wouldn't it have been noticed when the tower "fell"?

It was a tower for an AM station. That means if it wasn't a satellite station then it was likely either just rebroadcasting the company's FM signal or the automation is just constantly playing some format like old country, gospel or news-talk (ie: something with no listeners at night). If it's owned in conjunction with an FM (which the story seems to hint) then it's kept around for advertising to be sold as a package "deal" (two stations instead of one).

Possibly. It likely happened in the dead of night though, so if it was close and loud enough to wake anyone then when they didn't hear anything else they probably went back to sleep.
If it's where I think it is, it's near a train track. If a train was coming through at the time then that would have helped cover for some of the sound of the tower coming down.
