If used right, they can actually save you money in some circumstances. Most people just hold on to junk.
It can take a lifetime to accumulate tools or business materials and machinery, parts, etc. If your circumstances change, such as a move, a divorce, a death in the family, or a loss of employment, etc., it can be a lifesaver to be able to store your things until you get back on your feet.
