Diversification, philanthropy, and other things cost Bill Gates $1.2T in wealth

Post IPO, Bill Gates owned 45% of Microsoft. At today’s valuation that would be worth $1.3T, yet Gates only owned a little over 1% of Microsoft and has a net worth of around $130B.
He’s sold billions to fund charities (and arguably trying to take over the world according to some), and has made various other investments over time that account for the rest of his net worth.
Simply incredible wealth.

There is some validity there. Historically, anyone with incredible wealth has tried to enforce their will and beliefs onto the lesser people.

Nothing about his actions speaks to net worth being his optimization measure.

The argument can be made that MSFT would not have the market value is has today if Gates or any other single individual held a 45% stake. There would be a discount due to it being closely held. Bill is probably ok with giving up the stock for the reasons you mentioned such as diversification, philanthropy; and most important, liquidity. I imagine his post IPO life has been exactly the same with a net worth in the billions as it would have been with a net worth in the trillions.
