Seems like those would be a constant problem though, and not just in reverse, but maybe I'm missing something?

Reverse puts a load on the motor. If the idle is off or dirty, it can cause a stall that neutral or drive wouldn’t.

As another poster mentioned - clean the air intake if you haven’t done it in a while. That would be a better step one before replacing the sensor.
