I just don’t get why some of you are creating fantasy scenarios in your head to get upset about. You absolutely can disagree with the goal and direction of the franchise, but it’s blatantly obvious the mandate at whatever level is to be as competitive as possible every year, at the expense of the long term future. And roster and cap decisions the team makes support that goal. That’s just how it is.
Payton’s first year, we didn’t have a QB, we threw a bunch of money at an injured, not yet elite Drew Brees. That one just happened to work out, there isn’t any genius or anything behind it.
Now if Carr was an unquestionable, total disaster this year it would be interesting to see what they would’ve done.

That level is mediocre.

The problem is we'd be in the same position, or slightly better, by making better decisions. Like signing guys like Baker or Dalton to short-term deals.
Carr is a mediocre QB who will lead us to the same mediocrity for a lot more money. In what world is that good decision-making?

Nothing. His contract tells us that.
