California used to be largely conservative and eventually turned into what it is today.
It happened to Colorado. It can and will happen to Texas. First the dark red fades to light red then it turns purple then it turns blue.

It is happening and it is frightening. It amazing how much DFW area alone has changed politically since I moved here in 2006 after Katrina.
