The higher end TCLs grade better than some mid/higher tier TVs. You're likely thinking of the 300 dollar ones you get at Wal Mart.

TCL makes solid TVs, in sweeping terms they are dollar for dollar as good as Sony, Samsung, and LG but at the upper-mid and high end the Japanese/Korean brands make better panels. My only real issue with them is that they are Chinese and I avoid as many Chinese goods as possible though anything but true high end electronics are going to have some Chinese content in them.
