Football is the predominant sport here. So the same mindset predominates every sport. The reality is basketball teams often ebb and flow throughout the season.
Take the 2023 MBB champ, UConn. They started out on fire. 14-0 through the first two months of the season. Then suddenly they collapsed. From 12/31/22 - 1/25/23 they went 2-6. They were getting beat by every good team in the Big East. Worse. They lost back to back games against two very average teams, St. Johns and Seton Hall. One of those at home. They went from being ranked the #2 team in the country to barely staying ranked.
Then, as suddenly as their collapse happened, they seemed to flip a switch and start kicking everyone's arse. Eventually they entered the NCAAT as a #4 seed and proceeded to completely dominate the tournament en route to a National Championship. Their SMALLEST margin of victory in the entire tournament was 13 points. And those games really weren't that close.
I'm not saying this LSU team will do that. But it's a bit early to throw dirt on the grave of an 18-4 team.
