I do. In the books and the movies. Mainly in ROTK. Just because there's some pity involved doesn't mean he's not hated. He's on almost every "most hated movie character" list you find when you google it.

I think the hatred we have for Gollum is dulled by his unique speaking manner and entertaining nuttiness more than any pity.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve just never heard anyone hating on Gollum with close to the hate intensity caused by Jar Jar or Delores Umbridge.
