True Detective S1E5: Did Rust kill off Ginger before arriving at the cookhouse?

Doing a rewatch and I noticed a huge plot hole in episode 5.
After all the drama that went down in the previous episode and Ginger finding out that “Crash” was a rat, I feel that leaves a giant question mark about what Rust did with him.
In first thought it was just a simple knock him out and leave him stranded on the side of the road.
However, on the rewatch I noticed Rust told Marty that Ginger was “Wrapped up in a ditch.” After being asked what happened to him.
Sure, he had him bound in duct tape, but it gives the feeling Rust offed him and left him somewhere. The only thing that debunks this in my mind is Rust was in a hurry and didn’t have time to bury him.
However, leaving him alive seems like a huge misstep in keeping himself and Marty safe. Ginger now has intel on him, has seen Marty’s face, and could lead his gang to eventually piece it all together.

I thought about that at the time, but maybe the motorcycle gang would never piece it together considering they only knew him by his undercover name, plus Ginger likely would never spill the beans to anyone about what he’d done.

Yea he had no clue who Crash was in the real world. And Ginger was a wanted man for the Beaumont shite. His move was to STFU for a few years.
Good question, OP.

I commented on this in a different thread. It could go either way. But hypothetically, Ginger just lead a man to the only meth cook for the Iron Crusaders. Add in the botched smash and grab job in the projects and he should have gotten as far away from Texas as possible.

Weren’t Marty and Rust in every newspaper in the state and probably east Texas after they “solved the murders” the first go around?

Yes. That’s a legitimate point. I also thought about that.
Maybe no one wanted to bring up that they all got flim-flammed.
Maybe the biker gang has a high turnover rate.

The quote that keeps me in the Rust does bad shite camp is.
“The world needs bad men. We keep the other bad men from the door”
Seems like his way of justifying how he handles every situation.

Whatever happened to the people Rust made kill themselves? Besides that they killed themselves
What was that about in terms of plot

Smokescreen from the writers to have the audience thinking Rust could possibly be the killer. He told the girl in prison that jail wasn’t kind to baby killers and she should kill herself if given the opportunity. Rust was just burned out.
This parallels the pharmacy fiend in jail killing himself. The guy that told him they didn’t catch the Yellow King. However, what a lot of people overlooked is the fact that one of the guards on duty the night the guy killed himself was named Childress. They say his name. So it’s implied he was connected to the ring and gave the Pharmacy Fiend the means to off himself in jail.
