Some of the most disappointing ChEs I’ve worked with had their PE. In that field, a PE means nothing to me about a person’s ability to solve problems and contribute to a team.

There are definitely sub-par engineers that compensate by pointing at their PE certificate. I never found a PE of any use in my ChE career. And that includes some consulting and relief valve calculations. Ultimately you live and die by your reputation, not a PE certificate. But I think that's changing as the world continues to become more bureaucratic.
