Pick one of these bad boys up. Form into roll. Make own icing. Sprinkle with purple/green/yellow. Costs all of $5, way better than any supermarket or local bakery. Eat better and save money: win/win.

This is what most stores around here do, rarely is a king cake made from scratch. I know for a fact that Rouses is just a cinnamon roll that is shaped decorated, Oak Point is frozen dough that is baked as well.

I'd really like to see a list of vendors that actually made king cakes from scratch.

When I bake these I always make 2 different fillings

This one is Pralines and Cream

I think I will have to make the filling a little but more dense

If you've ever had a Randazzo's King Cake, it is basically the same dough as their cinnamon rolls and same type icing with the exception of the purple, green and gold sprinkles added.

If you can make a good brioche dough, you have the base for an excellent king cake. But a brioche takes two days to make because you need two layers of a gluten net to make a springy dough(not flat and stiff)
Also, making the blueberry or maybe apple filling is not hard.
Now the cream cheese is different, because as it bakes the cream cheese is absorbed into the brioche.
But I kind of like that because it keeps the crumb soft.
But that's just me.

Not sure of the best, but the worst is McKenzie’s. It’s basically French bread with icing. Anyone that says McKenzie’s is the best is lying their arse off.
