I created a topic a few weeks ago and took the boards advice on rolling over my previous employers 401K into a Vanguard account that I can control. I am rolling over a little more than $150k and am now looking for advice on what stocks to invest in. I see most of the MT is invested in VOO, NVDA, etc. What are my options here and what stocks do you suggest? Im 40 y/o so I still have a while before retirement. I have also created a Roth IRA that I plan to contribute to along with my current 401k thru my employer. Any input would be appreciated!

Forget about individual stocks. Go the index route. Set it and forget it.

I am in VTI, a small position in VOO. My only individual stock holdings are MSFT and AMD.

Moderate positions in treasuries and cd’s. I am nearing retirement.

Keep most of it in a few indexes, or just VOO. Nvda is still running and worth it if you keep an eye on it. Not daily, but monthly or quarterly. Amd as well.

Aapl, msft, amzn, hd are some good buy and hold options. Waste Mgmt has been a solid one as well.

QQQ has been my favorite over the last 20+ years.
-

In the past 10 years, VOO has returned investors an average of 12.94% after taxes and the sale of fund shares. QQQ has been around since 1999, but when looking at the numbers from the previous decade, the company has returned investors an average of 16.93% after taxes and the sale of fund shares.

Are you comfortable seeing 20-30% dips about every 3-4 years?

Granted, you’ll probably average 8-10% over the next 20-30 years in VTI, VOO, and other broad indexes, but that’s not a straight line.

Average US retail investors woefully underperform broad indexes because they can’t stick to their long term plan during periods of short term volatility.

More of a set it and forget it. Its pretaxed so I dont believe Im allowed to contribute to it. As far as the Roth is concerned, I plan to start maxing that out yearly and was curious of what the consensus was on stocks to consider. The volatility of the stock wont bother me as much.

Good, then ignore all the individual stock advice on this board.

Roll with VTI or, if you want to get a little more fancy, consider using VV, VO, and VB to build your large, mid, and small cap allocations. The latter two are rarely discussed around here because they’ve fallen out of favor the last few years, but they historically outperform large stocks.

Same. No need to reinvent the wheel if you’re not trying to stay on top of it.

This is good advice, and most of my money has always been in indexes. But I found that playing with individual stocks kept me interested and more engaged. This led to me educating myself more.

General rule of thumb:

Own indiv. stocks/bonds/ETFs in NQ account

Own actively traded securities in Qual acct
