The LSU military museum says the color nor the cord is correct to be ROTC. Their strap was leather. The archivst at LSU library thinks possibly Band Director or Band Officer. He's still researching. Not many uniforms nor hats pre-1958 from the band made it from the Music Hall fire.

I'm too leaning something ROTC bc of insignia. The Ostwalt thing throws it off though.

Having been around a lot of military uniforms, I will defer, then. The back and white pictures sure look more black patent leather than any bouillon style or gold cord strap as in your color picture.

I just can't put my hands on pictures of band hats that look like that. That is an Army officer open eagle with a LSU banner. I can't get past that. Maybe it was a special one off or limited band cap.
