You could also just not vote for them in a general election and vote for someone else?
I’m not seeing how a closed primary achieves anything that the current system doesn’t.

Strong Republicans won't win too many general elections in Louisiana.
We are not a pure red state.
We only are a "Republican" state because of so-called RINOs.
We lean right on some issues and are very populist / left on others. We are purple in many ways... it's just that many of the purple candidates run under the R banner.
But if you start having general elections between a Dem and a far-right Republican... you aren't going to like the results.
