Several issues at play

Several parishes have older school buildings that are harder to heat up and retain heat

Safety issue at school with ice patches and kids being generally dumb around it

Safety issues for student who have to stand and wait for a bus

Issue that some students come from poor parents and can't properly get warm enough clothes

Safety issue that Louisiana school buses are not equipped for cold weather. They don't have heaters, no seatbelts, sit high off the ground so any ice on the road from previous ice melting becomes and issue.

Safety issue of adults driving for some of those reasons

Schools have days built in for hurricane and weather in Louisiana. What they will do is change an early dismissal, teacher in-service, or "fun" day for students into a classroom day. It is better to err on the side of caution than to have something happen. Even if it inconveniences some individuals.

A school here in north AL had a couple pipes burst and completely flood a large portion of the school. A majority of the ceilings will have to he replaced from the looks or it. They will have virtual class through Monday, and go from there.

They weren't in class when it happened, of course.
