If only we had a way to figure out what was on their minds at the time...
Oh, I bet there is. A number of states wrote out there articles of secession and listed the main problems as they saw it in their own words.
That way history would be unambiguous about the root causes. But these articles aren't discussed now. Ever wonder why?
Research their own words and people might be surprised.

Missourians began the resistance against the federal government in1856, some kept resisting for years after the Civil War.
