True

As it was stated, seems like they're trying to skirt around having to give her severance so they can save a few bucks.

Severance is never actually required unless detailed in the contract (and they weren't for her role). The reason so many companies were paying "severance" last year is because when you do a large enough layoff you're required to give your employees notice. Obviously they can't do that and function, so they tell employees their job stops today but they'll still get paid for X months to satisfy the government requirement for notice.
