The Mandela wasn't about Berenstain and Bernstein it was Berenstain vs Berenstein. I'm sure peoples remembrance of this was not how it was spelled but how it was mispronounced by their parents reading them the book. You heard it, mispronounced, as Berenstein/Bernstein and you automatically thought that's how it was pronounce and spelled.
I can almost guarantee adults, in America, reading their kids the books got the name confused with the famous composer of the time Leonard Bernstein.
Also the names of the authors who created the books were Jan and Stan Berenstain. Later their son Mike Berenstain continued writing the series. They created the series after their own last names.
