I spent yesterday at a wrestling duals event here in Texas yesterday. I had never been involved in wrestling before my kid got involved in middle school. He was already way behind the curve and I am told Texas is not a strong wrestling state. The team has a few very good wrestlers, usually families who moved from out of state or have a dad who was a college wrestler.
There’s no other sport like wrestling. The matches are 1v1 and there’s nowhere to hide. Coaches call out advice during the match but the opponent can heart it as well and it comes down to who can execute better. I’ve only seen one match where a kid lost his cool and shoved a kid after the match and the pusher was immediately kicked off the team by the coach. The coach later allowed the boy to rejoin the team but in a support role, not able to compete, and the kid agreed.
At least there weren’t any injuries in the event yesterday beyond the usual bloody noses.
