It's a conditional, hypothetical statement, not an assumption. The key here is the use of the conjunction, "if".

I find that the older I get, the less tolerant of religion I become - whether it's the Jews, Muzzies or Jesus freaks. But I still support their right to be idiots in this country, until they start training to overthrow us. Then, frick 'em.
