FWIW my son killed his first as a skin and bones numb nuts with a 7mm-08. My little girl killed her first as an even smaller 7 year old with a.308 shooting reduced recoil rounds. He shot once because he hit and she shot twice because she missed the first. Neither one ever shot a rifle at a deer but both shot my 10-.22 to learn. Neither complained about the kick or noise. I’m a 7-08 fan but a .308 believer for ammo selection. Also depends on the rifle. Good luck
Edit- my friend’s son shot a spike with 300BO and it died within 100 yds. We found very little blood but high shoulder shot killed him. Did not pass through and he said it was federal premium or hornady rounds but not sure which

My kids have killed 8 deer with 300 BO out of an AR. Never lost one. All shot with 110gr Hornady VMAX. Some have had a pass through others did not. Some great blood trails and some not great. All deer shot within 150 yards
