Don't they sell reduced recoil 308 rds? I'd go with that if so, it'd be a gun he could use for life with readily available ammunition.
Indeed, this would be a good choice, as well, especially for the bandleader. This is the route I went when my son started hunting. I bought him a Savage bolt action in 308 Win when he was 10 yo. Reduced recoil loads hadn't been "invented" yet so I made my own using 125 gr NBT at 2400 fps. IIRC, he killed 7-8 deer w/ that bullet w/o any problems. All were one shot kills expect one where he didn't make a good shot. As he got older, I upped the velocity to 2600 fps. He even killed a deer when he had a broken collar bone on the same side as the gun's recoil pad. The 125 gr NBT is a really nice deer hunting bullet at reduced velocity. OTOH, if the OP wants a youth gun in the AR15 platform, the 300 BO and 6.5 Grendel would both be really good. I've killed 25-30 deer w/ the 6.5 JDJ in a Contender handgun. Ballistically, the rifle Grendel and handgun 6.5 JDJ are ballistic twins. Keep us updated.
